September 4th, 2011. I cannot believe this. Three years ago, on this day, Niyati, Anupa and I ascended on the Lyman High School stage and danced and danced and danced. After years of practice we were finally deemed good enough to have an Arangetram. The Arangetram is a 2 hour long performance to signify one's completion/graduation of the Indian classical dance (Bharatanatyam) art form. By the end of the performance the dancers receive a diploma from their teacher. I was only 12 when I completed my Arangetram, which is quite young for a graduate (but there's a long story behind that...I would have done it later if I could :) After this experience I didn't just end up with a certificate in my hands. I made lifelong friends, was able to spend a lot of time with my amazing teacher, and found a passion that describes me. I was 5 when I went to my first dance class. Back then I didn't know any better. My mom wanted me to dance so I did. As I attended more and more classes, I realized how hard yet beautiful this art is. I pushed through. I practiced (maybe not as often as my parents wanted me too...) until I was capable of performing on that stage, in front of hundreds of people. The three of us spent countless days with bruised knees, tired arms and sore legs. Then the day came, and none of that mattered anymore. We had done it.
