I never got to post about this, but I really want to share my experience at Girls Who Code. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- 5 days a week, 7 hours a day for 7 seemingly short weeks. This year, I spent most of my summer at the Girls Who Code Immersion program, at Austin Texas (hosted by Indeed). The experience there could not be beaten. Not only did they promote girls in tech by teaching us the fundamentals of coding, but considering the amount of times I had reached Cloud 9 from the delacacies provided, I'm surprised that I'm not actually in heaven by now. Since the program was 7 weeks, I'm going to break down this post into 2 sections: the coding portion, and the food portion. Personally, they are (almost) equally delightful. Coding: 6 hours a day, 20 girls, including me, all learnt the basics of multiple coding languages, as a way for the program to expose us to the different forms that are commonly used in this day and age. Each week we would focus on something different. Week 1 was the program Scratch, used as a way to get us used to the operations avaiable for us when we get into actual languages. Week 2 and 3, we learnt about Python -- creating bouncing balls, moving screens and even simple games. Never being exposed to anything but a bit of HTML, this was all completely new to me. The following week we worked with robots! We set them up and followed it by programming it how to display lights (ours said SOS), avoid walls, and by the end, we had a synchronized dance party! Week 5 provided us with lessons on HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and by the end of the week, we were even allowed to participate in Indeeds semi-annual Hackathon. For our Hackathon project, we created a website that allowed incoming seniors to track all the due dates for their college deadlines. (wink wink any colleges who happen to see this post ;p ). Now that we had a feeling for how a timed project would work, we almost immediately got to work on our final project for the class. My group and I decided to work on a webite that focuses on envioronmental and social issues in our everyday lives, complete with a scenario game and facts about common problems. I am proud to say that our project got featured on the GWC Instagram page!! Here is the site: http://www.commandshiftcode.com/reality/final/HomePage.html Check it out!! FOOD: Every day. Everything imaginable. Everything free. 24/7 snacks and drinks.See for yourself.
