This summer, I also got the opportunity to be selected from a shortlisted group of people to volunteer at Nemours Children's hospital. It was 1 day a week for 7 weeks (8 hour days!). It was a great experience -- and the food was good too! Ms. Joelle, the head of volunteer services, was amazingly nice to everyone there and very accommodating to fit us in something we were interested in. Each day had two shifts; my first one allowed me to do arts and crafts with the children in the waiting areas and my second shift had me work at the KidsTRACK area, where I was assisting them in organizing a closet filled with resourced to be given to families. I was really surprised and honored when my supervisor at KidsTRACK, Ms. Monica, asked me to come in after my India trip to talk to someone who's career path I was interested in. I will be sure to do so as soon as I can!

The best part about 1 day trips to a new city is not the car rides there, or the disparate environment, or even the local food. No, the best part about day trips is the feeling at the end, when you reflect on the day in your own bed, and just think of exactly how much you accomplished during those last 24 hours. Chances are it's quite memorable and you would give anything to feel that way every night. Because I know I sure would.
A few days ago, Niyati's family and our family decided to start off the college tours for the summer and drive south to visit the University of Miami. To say the rest of the day was interesting would be an understatement. 1) 5:30 am -- Were on the road and begin our 238 mile journey south. With less than half a tank of gas. Once on the turnpike, we realize that there's just a long stretch of road in front of us, with no gas and too early in the morning for anything to be open. Wonderful. Luckily, literally at the very last minute we are able to take an exit and fill up the tank. #WhenGodComesThrough 2) 8:30 am - 12:00 pm (2 pm if you include lunch) -- We reach the school and begin the tour. The university is quite nice, with a lively ambiance and great programs that are offered. The tour goes on for a bit longer than expected; quite hungry by the end. 3) 4:00 pm -- After much "negotiating" (to put it in nicer terms) Niyati and I find ourselves 400 feet above sea level as we try parasailing for the first time. For those who have never done it before, it feels like being on a swing in heaven. Its worth the money. 4) 5:00 pm -- After parasailing: canoeing. Being amateur canoe-ers we felt it was quite impressive when we were able to retrieve Niyati's sinking hat in a matter of seconds 5) 6:30 pm -- Make it to Miami's famous South Beach. Being July 4th weekend, we imagined the beach to be crowded, but we were given a pleasant surprise when we found it quite sparsely filled with people. The beach itself was absolutely gorgeous, with cerulean colored warm water and sand that hugged all your tiny toes. I would have to say this is the best beach I have visited in the US. 6) 9:00 pm -- Out of the beach by about 8:30, find a restaurant nearby by about 9. Naked Tacos. Free shots on the house (for adults of course). Then chips and gauc worth $25 that we thought was on the house. General Tso's Cauliflower soft taco on a corn tortilla. I would go back to Miami just for that. 7) 9:45 pm -- Gelatos from a local store. Coffee and Pinapple. Very full at this point. Very full. 8) 10:00 pm -- Begin our 3 and a half hour journey back, singing the entire way and reaching home by about 1:45. Bed at 2. Reflections. Day Well Spent. |
